The Lake District National Park was formed in 1951 and is the largest in England, it features the highest mountain in England - Scafell, the deepest lake - Wastwater, the longest lake - Windermere and attracts over eight million visitors a year.
Wordsworth's 'Guide to the Lakes' published in 1810 started tourism and when the railway arrived in Windermere in 1847 it became the destination for those wishing to explore the wild mountains, lakes and glorious countryside that is the essence of Cumbria and the Lake District.
