The original larch trees from Tyrol are in the grounds - from which the seeds alongside Japanese larch created the hybrid now cultivated across the northern hemisphere. With some good hotels and fine specialist retailers this is a popular wee place.The nearby Loch of Lowes is a great place to see the resident pair of Osprey during the summer months.
A busy tourist honey-pot now by-passed and off the A9. A great many hotels, pubs, restaurants and retailers and even a theatre and the famous Salmon Ladder all keep the visitors entertained, whilst the smallest distillery in the country is also to be found here. The town is at the geographical centre of Scotland.
A major battle of the 1715 Jacobite rebellion that saw the death of Bonnie Dundee, who led the Jacobites who infact won the day. This was Rob Roys first taste of battle as a young boy.The 'Soldiers Leap' is a ravine that one of the government troops jumped some 18ft to safety. A visitor centre is located at this National Trust property.
Thatched cottages, an ancient yew tree [the oldest in Europe at some 3000 years old] and a fine hotel are all to be found here at the foot of Glen Lyon. Legend has it that this was the birthplace of Pontius Pilate, whose father was a Roman ambassador sent here by Augustus to meet the Scottish king Mercellanus.
